Lance Corporal Taran Cheeseman - 19th June 1987 - 7th June 2009.
Lance Corporal Taran Cheeseman from Mansfield Nottinghamshire, of the 4th Battalion the Rifles, died on 7th June 2009, aged 21 after being taken ill in Afghanistan.
Lance Corporal Cheeseman joined the Army in 2005, and did a tour of Iraq in 2007 before deploying to Afghanistan on 30th May 09. His father Steven said that his son was suffering with stomach pains before he went away on May 30th, but that Tay had wanted to go to Afghanistan 'to look after his boys'.
When he arrived in Afghanistan he became seriously ill and was treated at the camp's hospital but as he stepped on the plane back to Birmingham he collapsed and remained unconscious until his death. It is believed that he died of a very aggresive form of cancer.
He was a keen footballer and played for Forest when he was 12 and then for Mansfield Town from 13 to 15 years old. He was an avid supporter of Chelsea Football Club.
He leaves behind his Mother Tracey, Father Steven, an older brother and three younger sisters, along with his girlfriend and their two children.
A funeral was held with full military honours, and his Commanding Officer gave the eulogy, his best friend from the regiment read a tribute and his mother read a poem that she had written for him. |
