Richard was born on 7 December 1978 and even from a young age he always put his friends and his family before himself. Throughout his school years he excelled academically and was known for his sporting abilities and amazing fitness. He attended Handsworth Grammar School in Birmingham where he turned into a kind, strong and independent individual. After always expressing interest in the armed forces, at 18 he left for France to join the French Foreign Legion before receiving his brilliant “A” Level results. Over the course of 5 ½ years Richard served in Kosovo, Macedonia and Chad.
After completing his contract he returned to England to join the British Army, turning down the offer to study at Birmingham University. He became an officer after completing his training at Sandhurst and was assigned to Al Amarah in Iraq where his leadership skills he had always possessed shone through as did his kind, strong personality and sense of humour that his men loved him for.
